- The laws of information chemistry – O’Reilly Radar –
In the course of my work on the elmcity project I’ve talked to a lot of people about forming networks of calendars. One of the major hurdles has been the very idea that we can form such networks, in an ad-hoc way, using informal contracts. Later in this series I’ll explore why that’s a tough concept, and mull over how we might soften it up. Here I’ll focus on an even more basic conceptual stumbling block: information structure.

Yesterday, BoomTown headed to the well-appointed downtown San Francisco HQ of Twitter as part of a renewed quest that I have dubbed “Meet the Twits.”
No, really! Since Twitter has been on a significant hiring spree of all kinds of execs and staffers–it now has almost 250 employees–I have been in need of some serious meeting and greeting to see what’s going on there at the microblogging kingpin.
In fact, on my way to chat with COO Dick Costolo and VP of Engineering .. show all text - The Facebook Location Perspective, Then and Now –
Back when I first got a Facebook account in the spring of 2004 as a college student, it had a location feature. There was a space on each user’s profile that automatically indicated the dorm cluster from where they had last logged in, based (I guess?) on their IP address. It was not opt-in. It was creepy and cool and voyeuristic to watch people check in on the site from around campus. It was WAY before its time. Tonight, Facebook is expected to finally launch Facebook Places, its overdue.. show all text - HOW TO: Make Your Mobile Websites Act More Like Native Apps –

- The Tragic Death of Practically Everything –
Wired Editor in Chief Chris Anderson is catching flack for the magazine’s current cover story, which declares that the Web is dead. I’m not sure what the controversy is. For years, once-vibrant technologies, products, and companies have been dropping like teenagers in a Freddy Krueger movie. Thank heavens that tech journalists have done such a good job of documenting the carnage as it happened. Without their diligent reporting, we might not be aware that the industry is pretty much .. show all text - You Like? Facebook Makes Updates To Its "Like" Button –
Facebook is rolling out updates to the design of its popular Like Button, which now looks similar to the newly introduced Tweet Button. The revamp also provides a subtle yet noteworthy change in the button’s usability.
The button now displays the “Like” count to the right of the icon in its own box, instead of floating on its own. Clicking prompts a thumbs-up image to appear, alongside a count of the number of people who have Liked it. Before, the button would turn a dark blue.. show all text(1)jeffisageek: You Like? - Influencing the Influencer –
The competition for attention is focused on social networks as brands vie for awareness and consideration. Establishing a presence in Facebook and Twitter is as necessary as it is trivial. In the great social land grab, many organizations are missing true opportunities to connect with the fifth P of the marketing mix, people. It’s less about communicating with those individuals who are already following you online and more about those who aren’t.
To excel in social media, engagement.. show all text - Ray Kurzweil does not understand the brain : Pharyngula –
There he goes again, making up nonsense and making ridiculous claims that have no relationship to reality. Ray Kurzweil must be able to spin out a good line of bafflegab, because he seems to have the tech media convinced that he’s a genius, when he’s actually just another Deepak Chopra for the computer science cognoscenti.

The number of free wireless hotspots in the U.S. outnumber paid Wi-Fi locations for the first time, with 55.1 percent of public Wi-Fi locations available at no charge, according to a report from JiWire, an advertising company that focuses marketing specifically through Wi-Fi networks. The enthusiasm about social media among public relations professionals is rampant, and encouraging. Wanting to be at the center of a new way to communicate to customers and prospects is a worthy objective. But, under pressure from digital and advertising agencies each looking to be the driver of the social media express, PR firms are sometimes turning over inquisitional rocks that do not portray them as strategic caretakers of brands’ social presences.

Facebook has begun automatically suggesting links to Facebook pages, groups, interests and even other users this morning, offering a drop-down list of suggestions as you type.
The feature is reminiscent of Google Suggest, which tries to predict what you’re searching for by comparing what you type with popular searches, but the Facebook feature looks more directed at allowing you to include links to Facebook pages you’re already connected to.
