Google Maps Wikipedia Integration

Google has added a feature to Google Maps that lets you put a new layer of information drawn from Wikipedia over your maps. It is better seen that explained so go to Google Maps then:

In the upper right, click the ‘More…’ button

Select ‘Wikipedia’

You will then see a new layer on your map with little ‘W’ icons. These represent Wikipedia articles relating to places on your map. Here is an example. The larger ‘W’ appears to mean longer articles.

When you click the icon you get a pop up with some text from the article and a link to read more if the article is long.

This is a great way to play virtual tourist. Use it to help plan your next vacation or remember where you went on your last one. I think it could be really handy to help tag photos of statues and buildings.

  1. Hey that’s really cool. I’m not seeing the wiki link pull up on my Google more tab. I believe their in beta right now so not all accounts have it turned on.

  2. For the reasons you mentioned, I’ve included Wikipedia articles and Panaramio photos under the More… tab in the Google Maps displayed by MapMyPage. MapMyPage is designed to be the fastest, easiest way for bloggers and website owners to add Google Maps to any website. Just copy one line of JavaScript into a web page and MapMyPage will automatically add Google Maps to all the locations mentioned in the page.
