Why Safari on Windows is a Big Deal

Assuming that Apple gets security right in Safari for Windows I think it is going to be big. I have no intentions of changing. Firefox works great for me. I have it tuned just the way I like it across too many machines to bother with some new fangled browser that looks like iTunes. oooo brushed metal on Windows!

No kids, Safari will be a big deal for a whole separate set of reasons that can be summed up in two words: your mom. That is, the non geek who doesn’t give a rats ass about all this web standards nonsense that you have been trying to get off the Big Blue E and it’s security holes.

We geeks get who Mozilla is and what they are trying to do.  But who is Mozilla to, well, your mom? Right, no one. But if you tell them hey, get off of IE and use this new thing from Apple they might stand a better chance of actually trying it. You know mom, those guys that made your iPod?

So please, Apple, get the security right.

  1. Is it really that difficult to get people off IE? My mum doesn’t use the internet, but my similarly un-techy sister does and it was really easy to get her off IE. I showed her that Firefox was quicker and blocked pop ups (this was in the IE 6 days). My babble about security issues was background noise in comparison :)

I don’t see Safari gaining much traction on Windows at all outside of the developer community, which I think is Apple’s target audience here anyway. If talk about security and standards can’t shift them off IE to Firefox, I don’t see it working with Safari either, no matter who makes it.

Wouldn’t it just be easier to redirect the Big Blue E shortcut to Firefox and be done with it? ;)
