The Unblogosphere

This morning on The RSS Blog, Randy Morin posted about a link to Kent Newsome’s article about the unblogosphere. You have to first understand that an ‘unconference’ is a relatively new term for a new type of conference where there really isn’t an audience. Presenters and speakers are basically on the same plane with equal voice. For example, Gnomedex is run this way. On theory it’s good but you’re still going to have those that stand out because they are less introverted (read louder) than the others. Trust me, I was at Gnomedex ‘06. Still, on the whole, more interesting from the stand point that there was more give and take and if someone wanted to call B.S. or interject their standpoint there was ample time to do so. Much more fun and informative than being lectured at.

Point is, A-listers are that because they cross link and everyone else links to them as well. The non A-listers aren’t brought up the ranks because they aren’t well linked to. Time to start working on that more. Randy is a master at it. If I link to him, he’ll link back and give me some Google cred. I’ve been trying to a least bookmark the sites that link to me but I’m not sure how much juice that gets them. I’ll work on that.

The ’sphere went round about this a year ago. Kent had a rather amusing post back then as well.

The interesting and original stuff is down in the weeds of the the non-alist crowd. From time to time I’ve linked to TechCrunch or something I’ve read off of Techmeme but not so much anymore. As a matter of practice I don’t link to TechCrunch. With 8 zillion subscribers the world has most likely read it from the source anyway so I wouldn’t be adding much value. Nothing against Mike Arrington it’s just the current state of his site so bravo.
Same goes for other sites on Techmeme. Unless it seems there isn’t much chatter I don’t link. What would be better practice is to link to one of the non-alisters that are already linking and making smart points.
There are exceptions. If for some reason I wanted Arrington to see this post I would link. In that case it isn’t so much the Google juice as it is getting into the ego feed.
