photoshoptalent.com: Perhaps one of the most useful uses for photoshop has got to be repairing all those old photos that are slowly rotting up there in your attic. You now have the chance, not just to maintain alive a piece of history (which by itself is important enough), but also to learn more about your old, old folks, and let me tell you, you'll be amazed at how much you'll learn from one repaired old photograph.
Nice tutorial. Provides some old photos for you to practice on.

HollywoodReporter: The U.S. Copyright Office has rejected an exemption that would have allowed owners of DVDs to legally copy movies for use on Apple Computer Inc.'s iPod and other music players. But film professors now have the right to copy snippets from DVDs for educational compilations, the Copyright Office said Wednesday.
This is quite interesting. A lot of people go around quoting 'fair use'. I'll not exclude myself from that group so let's have a look at what the U.S. Copyright Office has to say. Fair use is spelled out in Copyright Act of 1976, 17 U.S.C. § 107.
§ 107. Limitations on exclusive rights: Fair use
Notwithstanding the provisions of sections 106 and 106A, the fair use of a copyrighted work, including such use by reproduction in copies or phonorecords or by any other means specified by that section, for purposes such as criticism, comment, news reporting, teaching (including multiple copies for classroom use), scholarship, or research, is not an infringement of copyright. In determining whether the use made of a work in any particular case is a fair use the factors to be considered shall include —
(1) the purpose and character of the use, including whether such use is of a commercial nature or is for nonprofit educational purposes;
(2) the nature of the copyrighted work;
(3) the amount and substantiality of the portion used in relation to the copyrighted work as a whole; and
(4) the effect of the use upon the potential market for or value of the copyrighted work.
The fact that a work is unpublished shall not itself bar a finding of fair use if such finding is made upon consideration of all the above factors.
So, since I'm not a critic or a professor or a reporter, I guess I can't legally copy onto a portable player. What if I grayed up the waters and
blogged about that movie I saw on my iPod? :o)
Interestingly, I found this quote from the RIAA:
If you choose to take your own CDs and make copies for yourself on your computer or portable music player, that's great. It's your music and we want you to enjoy it at home, at work, in the car and on the jogging trail.
Use it, don't share it is
their stand.
If anyone has any thoughts, comments or links to share let me know.

Flickr has started a new feature that is pretty cool. They have gathered the stats from picture data and created graphs to show which ones are gaining and declining in popularity. These graphs show the number of Flickr members who have uploaded at least one photo with a particular camera on a given day over the last year. You can also click and view photos by camera type.

Judging from what I see today, buy a Canon camera or a Sony camera phone.

Slashdot: "At 2:46 CST today, the game Second Life was hit by a massive attack by a rogue programmer. Spinning gold rings began to appear in the air and on the ground, and as users interacted with them they began to chase and replicate. Apparently, most people are willing to touch an object they've never seen before and this invoked a worm script that was designed to multiply and spread across the 2,700+ servers run by Linden Labs in California, the game's owner."
Yikes. Be careful out there gamers.

I wasn't going to cross post this but I think it is an important enough security/privacy problem that I think it is worth it.
From Firefox Help, Tips and Tricks:
There is a bit of a storied history with Firfox and 3rd party cookies. There used to be an option to disable them in the options dialog box but that was removed in Firefox 2. Fortunately you can easily modify the preference by using about:config.
In your address are, type about:config
Find the line that says network.cookie.cookieBehavior
Right-click on the line click Modify
Change the entry to a 1
Click OK
Restart Firefox

There has been a lot of talk about Windows Internet Explorer 7 over the last couple weeks as it is finally out of beta. Are
you ready for it? I'm not sure I am. I installed it on one of my machines and it wouldn't work so I promptly uninstalled. At least they give you that option.
If you are a little worried that Windows Update is going to push it down on your systems you might want to check out this new tool from Tim Fehlman over at Daily Cup of Tech. It lets you keep IE7 blocked or at arms length until you are ready for it. I say let the rest of the world debug the thing.
