Condolences to the Cochrane family

I was listening to my new podcasts on the way home last night. My heart nearly stopped when I came to Geek News Central and Todd Cochrane announced that he had just found out his father was killed in a car accident.
Losing a parent is tragic enough. I went through that 4 years ago with my dad. But for life to just end so suddenly in an accident like that seems so senseless.
My condolences to the Cochrane family. Todd, know that you and your family are in our thoughts and prayers.

Google Dials EBay

Google announced today that they are selling advertising space on eBay auction sites outside the US. There will be a link in the ad that lets buyers contact sellers via there computer or handheld.

Forbes: Internet auction site eBay last year bought Skype, an Internet phone service. Google has its own messaging and phone service. Both services will be used in the new partnership, but details weren't immediately available.

That last bit is was sparked my interest. This could be interesting to watch for everyone with Skype and or Google Talk.
Update: 29 AUG 06 12:45am: From GoogleTalk Blog:
Just as exciting are our plans to explore interoperability between Google Talk and Skype, making it easier for our users to chat with one another.

How to create a your own Feedburner feed count page

If you use Feedburner you know that it's kind of fun to log into your Feedburner account and see how many subscribers you have to your feeds. For those times I want to do a quick check I thought I'd create a web page that would display my feed counts so I didn't have to log in. Cool part is, there's no tricky programming or anything. Just a little bit of set up on the feed burner side and some copy/paste operations.
Here we go...
Open Notepad or some similar text editor and paste in the following HTML code:
<html>
<head>
<title>Stats from Feedburner</title>
</head>
<body>

</body>
</html>
Next, log into Feedburner. Go to your feed, click the Publicize tab and then click Feed Count on the left hand side. If you have not activated Feed Count, click the Activate button at the bottom. When Feed Count is active you'll see some HTML code where it says 'Copy this HTML'. Copy the code. Back in Notepad, between the body tags, type the name of your blog followed by <br /> then paste the Feed Count Code. Add another <br /> after the code.
That's it. If you have other feeds, get the Feed Count code from them and paste it below the previous Feed Count code.
You can get as fancy as you want by coloring your Feed Counts or adding CSS to your stats page. Go crazy. For me, it's just for a quick glance so I didn't care about all that.
Now you can save your page. Anytime you want to see your stats, just double-click on your file. No log in! Heck, you didn't even need a web server! Though you could put it on a server if you have some space out there some where. Mine is here to give you a visual if you had any trouble following what I said above: TechLifeWeb Feedburner Stats

Tom and Jerry quit smoking

MediaGuardian: Smoking scenes are to be edited out of classic Tom and Jerry cartoons, following a complaint to the broadcast regulator that they are inappropriate for a show aimed at children.

Weren't those shown before movies back in the day? Movies adults went to? Not that smoking is in any way to be glamorized but perhaps these cartoons weren't meant for kids to begin with.

RSS Alerts to your Instant Messenger with Feed Crier

Interesting new service has launched called Feed Crier. It is an IM bot that delivers real-time RSS feed updates to your desktop over popular instant messaging protocols. For end users, no account creation is necessary --
just send a message to the bot containing a feed URL and start getting feed alerts. Basic services are free, with premium services costing just a few dollars a month. Currently, Feed Crier is in beta using the AOL Instant Messenger protocol. Support for other IM protocols including Yahoo, MSN, and Jabber (Google talk uses Jabber) is under development.
I can't see using it for most sites that I read. However, for say job listings or maybe Craig's List where being the first to know is really important it might be worth signing up.
Signing up is easy. Just send an instant message to the screenname "feedcrier" and say subscribe your-feed-url.
Site authors might be interested in code they can add to their site to offer their feed via IM. Visit Adding Feed Crier to your Site for instructions and some html code. You'll end up with a button like this:

Get instant messenger update alerts with Feed Crier FREE.

How To Run Lotus Notes on Wine

Back in  Feb of '04 I wrote a short post on Lotus Notes 6.5.1 on Linux and Wine. One of my readers sent an email to let me know there is now a wiki page devoted to Lotus Notes on Wine over at winehq: http://wiki.winehq.org/LotusNotes
Why would you want to now that there is a native Notes client for Linux?
* the native version doesn't include a Designer
* the native version seems to have significantly higher system requirements
* some sites require an older release of Notes

Apple Updates Boot Camp for Windows

Apple released Boot Camp 1.1 containing many updates and is intended for all new and previous Boot Camp Beta users.
Boot Camp 1.1 Beta includes:

* Support for the latest Intel-based Macintosh computers
* Easier partitioning using presets for popular sizes
* Ability to install Windows XP on any internal disk
* iSight camera support
* Support for built-in microphones
* Right-click when pressing the right-hand Apple key on Apple keyboards
* Improved Apple keyboard support including Delete, PrintScreen, NumLock, and ScrollLock keys
NOTE: If you previously installed Boot Camp beta, you should update to Boot Camp 1.1 beta. You don't need to partition your hard drive again (unless you want to change its size) or reinstall your Macintosh and Windows software or documents, but it's very important to update the Boot Camp Assistant software, create a new Macintosh Drivers for Windows CD and install the updated software it contains on Windows XP. Complete instructions are provided in the Installation and Setup Guide included with the Boot Camp 1.1 beta software.

How to auto-correct common misspelled words in any application

Lifehacker points to a really useful application based on the wonderful Auto-Hotkey utility. Based on the wikipedia article on common misspelled words, the little app is designed to auto-correct common misspellings and because it  uses Auto-Hotkey's engine to watch what you type, it works across all your applications.

Save common locations with Google Maps

Google maps now lets you save locations if you are logged in. This is a great feature and one that has kept me using Yahoo! Maps for a long time.

The next time you start entering an address or a label into Google Maps, we'll offer to auto-complete it for you if it's in your saved locations. Auto-completion is also available when you're searching for businesses. If you've labeled the address "1600 Amphitheatre Pky, Mountain View, CA" as "work" (as some Googlers would), when you start typing [pizza near work], we'll offer to auto-complete it as [pizza near 1600 Amphitheatre Pky, Mountain View, CA].

Nice.

How to talk directly to a human when calling customer support

I just heard about a cool page called gethuman database. There you'll find customer service numbers for various US companies. These numbers either get you direct to a human or you'll see the necessary number sequence to press or things to say that will get you there.

Businesses in no hurry to buy Vista

So there's this new Bloomberg survey that was just released the other day. And some numbers caught my eye:

About 50 percent of companies either won't deploy Windows Vista at all or will wait at least 13 months after the system's November corporate release to begin installation, said Jupiter analyst Joe Wilcox, who surveyed 207 companies with more than 100 employees. An additional 13 percent had never heard of the new operating system.

Notice anything strange about that? Business never deploys right away. Some have policies never to install a 'dot zero' release so that isn't it. But how about those 13% who've never heard of the new OS??? I'll buy never looked at the beta or read all the articles, etc. But never heard of it?? Who the hell did they talk to at these companies? And if it wasn't the CIO (or equivalent) then all their numbers are skewed.

Here's your chance to show your (DIY) stuff and cross promote

So maybe you are a do it yourselfer with a knack for writing how-tos. Here is your chance to shine and get a well placed link back to your personal blog or other site. What's going on? Well, Chris Pirillo and Jake Ludington have created a new site called Lockergnome's Doing It. The idea is that you sign up and post drafts of your articles. They'll approve them and post them with a link back to your own site.
Chris: "a DIY/GTD group blog that anybody can join at any time. Sign up, post a draft immediately, and never post again for all we care (or continue to post, if you get enough cross-promotional or search engine traffic from the coverage)."
Sounds interesting. Fun to watch and see what happens. Subscribed.

The egg that will tell you when it's perfectly boiled

Telegraph.co.uk reports on eggs imprinted with thermochromic  ink that appear after three minutes to indicate a soft-boiled egg, after four minutes for medium and after seven minutes for a hard-boiled egg.
Now it would just scramble itself and pop the bread in the toaster you could have a complete breakfast.
