Yes, i was also surprised how they do this. They don't allocate hard disk space fully, instead they follow a method called, "Virtual Drive Spacing", through this they will put a value to our gmail saying the "more than 2GB" but we may use only 2MB, so the actual space consumed is 2MB, but in gmail i will show as a lot of space is available. Only 10% of gmail user uses the 2GB space properly :-). Like me (60% of space filled already).
