30-year weather forecast by Japan
Japan has a supercomputer called Earth Simulator that they plan to use to simulate Global weather patterns over the next 30 years.
Expected to cover the whole planet, forecasts will tell which areas are likely to experience recurring disasters such as typhoons, storms, heavy snow, coastal erosion and droughts. The forcasts will be for areas as small as 2 square miles.
Earth Simulator has been online since 2002 but used only for short term forcasting. At 35 trillion calculations a second it is second only to IBM's Blue Gene supercomputer.
