If you check things out from the library this service could prove really useful. It's called Library Elf. It's free to sign up, you just need an email address and your library card. You might want to check the list of supported libraries to see if yours is one of them before you sign up.
The service will monitor the status of your library account and ping you via email and/or RSS that you have a book due or overdue. It will also monitor the status of things you have ordered.
One thing to be aware of, if you use Bloglines to monitor your feed, is to set the feed to private when you add it to Bloglines. This just helps ensure your privacy.
