Yahoo's new mail client and my wish list

Ken Burton has a nice preview of the new Yahoo! mail. His review includes a few screen shots of the 3 pane interface. In a nutshell, he likes it and is telling Google to 'watch their backs'.  Competition is always a good thing.

Personally, I'm going to stick with GMail for now. I'm just not in the mind at the moment to go testing a new email client.

If the world asked me, here is what I'd like:
1. I'm not a huge IM user but lets come up with a client agnostic standard for IM. Use XMPP and be done with it.
2. On-line presence in my email client. If we have #1 then I can log in the my web based email, see a message from someone and know instantly if they are on line. It might just be easier to pop open my chat window and interact quickly and be done rather than the tedious tag-your-it form of email. This would be perfect for those times when all you want to say is just a simple "I'm at my desk, call me" chat transaction.
3. Let me use my web based email as my client for any POP enabled mail service. My ISP has POP but not a web based client. Let me use GMail (or whatever).

What are you looking for in a web base email client?
