Searchblog on the Google/Sun deal

John Battelle says the deal is all about the toolbar.

John Battelle's Searchblog: "I had been wondering how Toolbar downloads were going, given how important they are to Google's future (it's where all the marbles are, really, having a direct relationship with a person, a search history, a preferences set, you name it). The Toolbar, in the end, is how Google pushes out Microsoft. "

He points to a Bloomberg article: "Google could add ``tens of millions'' of customers through Sun's downloads, Schmidt said."

Interestingly, I do like the Google Toolbar but I've switched away from the native Google one back to the open source googlebar for Firefox. Why? Well, for one, I like it better because you can have it log into your Google account to make GMail and other things more seamless. It doesn't have pagerank but I've never really given much though to those numbers anyway. Also, I was able to get it to work with Firefox 1.5 beta since the native Google Toolbar doesn't work yet.

  • Yes, that's true. Toolbar downloads are one of Google's main success indicators. Their market share is directly tied to how many people download it.

Deals like the one with Sun Microsystems are quite important to achieving this goal, as Google needs to keep themselves at the front of people's browsers and of their minds.

If it Yahoo or Microsoft had secured the Sun deal, Google's market share would have almost certainly taken a major hit in the months ahead.
